Local Storage Bandwidth Specifications

Posted in Pro Tools

The following charts include both theoretical bandwidth and actual throughput speeds for specific local storage devices.  There is a difference in these values due to the overhead required to physically transmit the data as well as other limiting factors.

USB/Firewire:

Due to the popularity of today’s HD and High-Resolution workflows, the above charts do not include information about USB, Firewire or other storage technologies.  Though they may be popular or affordable, these formats do not have the necessary throughput to be very useful in today’s production environments.

As an example, one stream of Uncompressed HD (8-bit, 1080i @ 59.94fps) required a bandwidth of 120MB/s to play back.  As you can see based on the estimated actual throughput below, the following technologies are incapable of playing back a single stream of this media type:

TechnologyTheoretical BandwidthEstimated Actual Throughput
Firewire 400 (1995)400Mb/s35 MB/s

Co-Install notes for Avid Media Composer 6.5.3 (or higher) and Pro Tools 11 (or higher)

Posted in Pro Tools

Pro Tools 11 and higher is supported for co-installation with Avid Media Composer 6.5.3 and up. When attempting to co-install Avid Media Composer and Pro Tools, note the following:

  • Install Pro Tools first and then Media Composer (reverse install order for Media Composer 8.2.2 and Pro Tools 12.0 co-install).
  • You must uninstall all older versions of Media Composer or Pro Tools before installing newer versions.
  • Co-install does not support both applications launched simultaneously.
  • If you run into any issues, uninstall both applications and then reinstall them in the correct order.

Mac Notes
Before installing Media Composer, you must launch Pro Tools once to complete the Pro Tools installation (reverse install order for Media Composer 8.2.2 and Pro Tools 12.0 co-install).

Windows Notes
When you uninstall Pro Tools on an HD|Native or HDX system, choose to uninstall just the application, not the audio drivers.

Hyperthreading
It's recommended that you leave hyperthreading enabled unless otherwise specified by the compatibility document for a specific computer. For more information, please visit:

Avid S6 Compatibility

Last Updated : April 17, 2015
Products Affected : S6, S6_Master_Module

Software Compatibility

Avid S6 software version 1.4.1 is compatible with the following applications:
  • Avid Pro Tools HD 11.2.2 or higher (Pro Tools 11.3.1 or higher is required for some features)
  • Avid Pro Tools HD 12 (only supported with S6 v1.4.1)
  • Avid Studio Monitor Pro
  • Avid XMON S6
  • Apple Logic Pro 10 and higher
  • Merging Pyramix 8 Native only
  • Merging Pyramix 9
  • Steinberg Nuendo 5.5 and higher
Note that Avid Studio Monitor Express is currently NOT compatible with S6.

The WSControl application is compatible with Mac OSX 10.8, 10.9 and 10.10 and Windows 7 and 8.1. Check compatibility for individual EUCON-compatible workstation software.

Hardware Compatibility

Ethernet Routers

If you will use a third-party DHCP device to provide IP addresses to the modules, Avid recommends these routers from Cisco:
  • Linksys E3200
  • Linksys EA6500
Other routers have not reliably met the timing requirements of the S6 modules.
