In some circumstances the following error will appear immediately after clicking New Session in the File menu.

- Hold down the N key while launching Pro Tools. This will launch directly into the Playback Engine dialog.
- Choose a different playback engine in the top drop-down menu (choose something other than the default) and then hit OK.
- Now try and create a new session.
This procedure has resolved the assertion error in several cases.
