Unique IDs of audio files are not being checked for duplicates when importing audio into Pro Tools using Drag & Drop (this can result in displaying/referencing the wrong audio files)

Last Updated : April 2, 2013
Products Affected : Pro_Tools_1_6, Pro_Tools_HD

This is a known issue in Pro Tools 10.2-10.3.3.
The workaround is to use the File > Import Audio dialog.  Using Import Audio in this scenario will:
  • Link to the original audio file in the session if the name, date modified and unique ID are identical
  • When a duplicate unique ID is detected but the name or date modified as been alter a dialog will appear to "Stamp File" with a new unique ID to use it in the session or "Do Not Use" the file in the session.
This is fixed in v10.3.4.  When an audio file with an identical unique ID is imported via drag and drop, the following dialog will appear:
  • "Stamp File": this option will import the file as a new audio file with a new unique ID.  It is recommended to use this option when importing an audio file that was processed outside of Pro Tools in which case the name of the file and/or date modified has been altered.
  • "Use Original": this option will import the audio file to the session or timeline but will reference the original audio file being used in the session.  This option is recommended when the name of the file and date modified are identical to the original file.  If the name has been altered outside of Pro Tools, the newly named file will import to the session but Pro Tools will actually link to and play back the original audio file.
