MobileMe: Sharing calendars and single events simultaneously can cause unexpected results

Posted in Apple Portable Computers

Symptoms

MobileMe Calendar offers two primary ways to share calendar information with other people: sharing calendars and sharing single events by inviting people to them. Unexpected results can occur if these sharing methods are used simultaneously.

If you invited shared calendar participants or the calendar owner to events on calendars that are already being shared with them, or to calendars that they own, a variety of issues can occur, such as:

  • The shared calendar participants and the shared calendar owner may not be able to accept invitations to events on a calendar that is being shared with them, or to a calendar that they are sharing (in the case of a shared calendar owner).
  • Moving or editing calendar events may result in the events duplicating, disappearing, or moving to unexpected locations.
  • A single shared event may duplicate and become two events when edited by a participant who has "View & Edit" access to the shared calendar containing the event.
  • Calendar notifications may not update, show the correct state, or occur as expected.

Resolution

To avoid these issues, either share specific events or an entire calendar with a person, but do not do both simultaneously. You may also share events from calendars that are not already shared with invitees.

If you want to share an entire calendar, avoid inviting shared calendar participants to events on the shared calendar. Since you are already sharing the calendar with them, the participants already have the calendar. Inviting them to individual events is a duplicative effort and may result in the above issues.
