iCloud: Storage upgrades and downgrades

Posted in Apple Mac OS

Learn about the iCloud storage upgrades available to you, how to upgrade or downgrade your storage, and how to view or change your payment information.

When you sign up for iCloud, you automatically get 5 GB of free storage for Backup, Documents, and Mail. Your purchased music, movies, apps, books, TV shows, and Photo Stream don’t count against your free storage. If you need more storage space, you can upgrade to a larger 15 GB, 25 GB, or 55 GB storage plan for your iCloud account.

You can purchase the following amounts of iCloud storage:

  • 10 additional GB (15 GB total): $20/year
  • 20 additional GB (25 GB total): $40/year
  • 50 additional GB (55 GB total): $100/year

Or, instead of upgrading your storage plan, you can reduce the amount of iCloud storage you’re using. Learn how to manage your iCloud storage.

Note: You can change your iCloud storage plan at any time. Your storage upgrade will be billed every year unless you cancel by downgrading your storage plan from your iOS device, Mac, or Windows PC. When you request a downgrade, it will take effect one year after your storage upgrade was initially purchased.

Additional Information

If you purchase a higher-tier storage plan for your iCloud account to replace your existing storage plan (for example, a 25 GB to replace 15 GB), the existing plan will be canceled and you will receive a prorated refund for the time remaining. The new storage plan is applied to your iCloud account and the annual payment date updated to reflect the purchase date for the new plan.

Note: You cannot use Apple Store gift cards as a form of payment to upgrade your iCloud storage (payment methods accepted include iTunes store credit, credit cards, and debit cards). If you do not have enough iTunes store credit to complete your upgrade, you will be charged the remaining amount.
