Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation): Resolve issues with Apple Remote

Posted in Apple Portable Computers

If your Apple TV isn't responding to your Apple Remote, or if it responds intermittently, first follow these steps.

  1. Make sure that your Apple Remote has an unobstructed view of the front of your Apple TV (which is where the IR sensor is).
  2. If you have more than one Apple Remote, make sure that you're using the right remote for your Apple TV (each may be paired to a specific Apple TV).
  3. Try another Apple Remote if you have one.

The light on the front of the Apple TV usually flashes when it communicates with the Apple Remote. The pattern of the flashing can help resolve issues with the Apple Remote.

If the light flashes three times in quick succession, the Apple TV is paired with a different remote. Follow these steps:

  1. Use any Apple Remote to clear the current pairing by holding Menu and Left for six seconds. A broken chain-link icon will appear on your TV screen.
  2. Pair your current remote with the Apple TV by holding Menu and Right for six seconds. A chain-link icon will appear on your TV screen.
  3. Find more information about pairing and unpairing your Apple Remote if necessary.

If the light flashes when you press buttons on your Apple Remote but nothing happens on your TV screen, follow these steps:

  1. Hold Menu and Down on the Apple Remote to restart.
  2. If the issue isn't resolved yet, unplug the Apple TV from the wall outlet, wait at least six seconds, then plug it back in.

If the light doesn't flash when you press the buttons on your Apple Remote or if it doesn't flash with every press, follow these steps.

  1. Look for the low-battery icon on your TV screen .
  2. If you see the low-battery icon, please replace the Apple Remote's battery.

If your Apple Remote unexpectedly controls a Mac:

  1. Pair a different Apple Remote with your Mac if you have two or more remotes.
  2. Or, you can disable the IR receiver on your Mac.
    • Choose System Preferences from the Apple () menu in the upper-left of the menu bar.
    • Choose Security from the View menu.
    • Click the lock and enter your Administrator password if necessary.
    • Select (enable) the "Disable remote control infrared receiver" checkbox.

Refer to the Remote App for iOS if you are experiencing issues controlling your Apple TV with your iOS device.

Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.6

Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.6 adds the following features:

  • Expand multichannel audio files directly in the timeline for precise editing of individual audio channels.
  • Unified import window provides single interface for transferring media from file-based cameras, networks, and folders of files. Choose between Filmstrip and List views for browsing media, and save frequently used locations to the Favorites sidebar for fast access.
  • Redesigned Share interface for streamlined exporting. Deliver to multiple destinations in one step by creating a custom Bundle.

  • Dual viewers, each with a video scope display, let you compare shots to match action and color. Scopes include a vertical layout option so they can be displayed below the Viewer and the Event Viewer.
  • Ability to add chapter markers in the timeline for export to video files, DVD, and Blu-ray disc, with an option for setting custom poster frames.

Final Cut Pro X version 10.0.6 improves overall stability and performance, and adds these fixes:

  • Loop Play with Play Selection enabled will continuously loop playback while making adjustments in the Inspector.
  • DSLRs and other cameras that use the Picture Transfer Protocol (PTP) for data transfer will now appear in the Import window when directly connected to the computer.
  • Improves system performance and smaller project sizes when working with Compound Clips.
  • Clicking on a clip in the timeline selects the clip without moving the playhead. Option-clicking on a clip selects the clip and moves the playhead.

  • Ability to manually tag clips as anamorphic using the Anamorphic Override option in the Inspector.
  • When duplicating an event or project where media resides on shared storage, only the links will be copied. This speeds up duplicating or moving events and projects to another editing station that is linked to the same shared media.
  • Improves behavior when moving clips to different vertical positions in the timeline.
  • Generators now support the 1.8:1 aspect ratio, which is used with a range of frame sizes.

OS X: What is "other" space in About This Mac?

        Posted in Apple Portable Computers

The "About This Mac" window displays an estimate of how much space certain files are using on each of your drives.

To view Storage information for your connected volumes, select About This Mac from the Apple menu, then click the More Info button in the window that appears. Next, click the Storage tab to display storage information

         about this mac storage

Sometimes the "Other" category in the About This Mac window may seem large. About This Mac uses this category to count any files that aren't recognized as one of the other listed file types (audio, movie, photos, apps, backups). Examples of files that may be calculated as "other" include:

        • Items in the OS X folders such as the System folder and caches
        • Personal information such as documents, contacts, calendar data
        • App Plugins or extensions
        • Media files that cannot be classified by Spotlight as a media file because they are located inside of a package
        • File types not recognized by Spotlight

        Freeing up disk space

If you need to increase the amount of available disk space on your startup drive, examine the items in your home folder. Look in the Documents, Downloads or Desktop folders to see if there are any files you don't need anymore. Use these suggestions to reclaim disk space from these folders:

        • Delete items you don't need, or have copies of elsewhere, by dragging them to the Trash.
Once you're sure you don't need the items in the Trash, empty the trash to reclaim disk space. From the Finder, choose Finder > Empty Trash.
        • Move items to another drive, such as an external hard disk or flash drive.
        • Compress items you don't use frequently. Delete the originals of these files and keep the compressed copy instead.

Be sure to only delete items you no longer need, or have copies of elsewhere. It's a good idea to create backups of important files in case you accidentally delete an important item later.

See this article for additional suggestions on how to increase disk space.

        Safe Mode and disk space

When your computer is started in Safe Mode, the About This Mac window doesn't try to categorize your disk space. It simply displays all used space as "other". This is expected behavior. Not all features are available in OS X when started in Safe Mode.

Using 4K displays and TVs with Mac computers

            Posted in Apple Portable Computers

Learn about using 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with Mac computers.

MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013) and Mac Pro (Late 2013) computers can use 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs with OS X or Windows (via Boot Camp).

4K support on the Mac Pro (Late 2013)
Mac Pro supports 4K displays over both HDMI and Thunderbolt display outputs ports. The following resolutions and refresh rates are supported with the built-in HDMI port:

            • 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz refresh rate
            • 4096 x 2160 at 24 Hz refresh rate (mirroring is not supported at this resolution)

Mac Pro supports the following DisplayPort displays in 60 Hz operation:

            • Sharp PN-K321
            • ASUS PQ321Q
These displays default to 30 Hz (instead of 60 Hz) and need to be manually configured to support 60 Hz using the display's built-in controls by enabling MST (multi-stream) mode.
            • For the Sharp PN-K321, you can modify this under Settings > DisplayPort STREAM
            • For the ASUS PQ321Q, you can modify this under OSD menu > Setup > DisplayPort Stream

Note: If your specific DisplayPort display is not listed above, check with the display’s manufacturer for compatibility information.

4K support on the MacBook Pro (Retina, Late 2013)
MacBook Pro supports 4K displays and Ultra HD TVs at the following resolutions and refresh rates with the built-in HDMI port:
            • 3840 x 2160 at 30 Hz refresh rate
            • 4096 x 2160 at 24 Hz refresh rate (mirroring is not supported at this resolution)

About the OS X Server v3.0.2 Update

            Posted in Apple Portable Computers

This update includes improvements for OS X Server (Mavericks).

This software updates OS X Server v3.0 and v3.0.1 to v3.0.2. It requires OS X Mavericks v10.9.1 or later.

In order to allow L2TP connections to the VPN service you must also install the VPN Update for OS X Server. Install the OS X Mavericks v10.9.1 update first. After that you can install the Server v3.0.2 update and VPN Update for OS X Server in either order.

            How to install

OS X Server v3.0.2 is available from the Mac App Store. It will appear in the Updates pane if you have OS X Server (Mavericks) installed. Click the UPDATE button to install. To prevent the interruption of services, Server updates will not be automatically installed even if you have chosen to automatically install updates from the Mac App Store.

During the installation you may see the message "Server app replacement detected." This is a normal part of the update process. All Server settings and data will be preserved during the update.

After installation is complete, open Server app in order to finish setting up your previously-configured services.
