How to use Pro Tools without an audio interface on Windows and ASIO4ALL

Posted in Pro Tools

*Although this guide is intended to allow you to use ASIO4ALL with Pro Tools, ASIO4ALL is not officially supported or qualified by Avid for use with Pro Tools. We have found this configuration to work best for customers, but it has not gone through Avid's qualification processes. For a list of officially supported audio interfaces, refer to the Pro Tools system requirements pages.

Requirements:

  • Windows 7 or Windows 8 (Pro Tools 11 only)
  • Pro Tools 9 or higher
  • ASIO4ALL
  • Built-in sound card
Once you have Pro Tools and ASIO4ALL installed, launch Pro Tools, go to the Setup menu in Pro Tools and choose Playback Engine. Make sure that "ASIO4ALL v2" is selected at top of the window.

ASIO4ALL should automatically detect your computer's built-in sound card and route audio through it. If you're not getting audio playback from Pro Tools through your computer's built-in speakers, make sure that ONLY your built-in sound card is enabled in ASIO4ALL. Should you need to configure settings for ASIO4ALL, go to the Setup menu in Pro Tools and choose Hardware, then click Launch Setup App.

Refer to page 3 of the ASIO4ALL v2 Instruction Manual for instructions on how to configure the Device List. A shortcut to this document should automatically be installed to your desktop. If you are still unable to get playback from your computer's built-in speakers, try disabling the built-in sound card in the Windows Control Panel or refer to ASIO4ALL's troubleshooting forum.
