Play Frame Error on Interplay Assist

Posted in Pro Tools

First check the following:

1. Right click on My Computer
2. Click Manage
3. Click Device Manager
4. Click Network adapters
5. Double click your NIC Card (e.g. Broadcom Gigabit Controller)
6. Either:

a) Click Advanced > select Link Speed > choose Auto > click OK
b) Click Link Speed > change Speed and Duplex to 1.0GB > click OK

7. Close and relaunch Assist

If Link Speed was set correctly, then check next:

1.  Unity ISIS / Medianet must be logged in. Ensure the ISIS / Medianet login, has READ ACCESS to the workspaces necessary for the Assist user.

**If using Unity Medianet Connection Manager, ensure that the Assist station can get to the UNC paths of the workspaces, e.g. copy and paste in Explorer window  \\Unity File Manager hostname\Avid MediaFiles\MXF\folder name  The file manager name should not be entered as an IP address.  It should be entered as hostname

2.  If Dynamic Relink is enabled, ensure the proper resolutions are set for the Assist user.  If Dynamic Relink is disabled, or never was in use, this can be ignored.

3.  Check you are using a working network cable with enough bandwidth (e.g. Cat5 instead of Cat3).

4.  Check network bandwidth from Assist to the workspaces.  Use proper tools to ensure bandwidth health (for example, Path Diags)

From the Avid Interplay Software Installation and Configuration Guide on mounting workspaces:

"Avid editing applications, Interplay Assist, and Avid Instinct require Avid shared storage client software to function as clients in an Avid Interplay workgroup.

Explicit mounting of workspaces as drives might or might not be necessary, depending on your particular workflow. In general, there is no harm in mounting the workspaces that you need."

5.  Make note of the offline clip names.  Open Interplay Access, and update the clip name.

Watch if it stays online or goes offline.  If it goes offline, the media may have been deleted or moved to a location, not being indexed by the MI.

Hint: Play Frame Error does not always mean "bandwidth" problems but could point to legitimate Media Offline (MXF files are moved or deleted).  Check if Avid Editors are having the same problems when playing back the same media.

Avid Editors may show Media Offline or ameBaseStream::Connect failed to connect errors, which may signify disconnected workspaces on MI server, Media Indexer not indexing a workspace properly, etc.

6.  As a last resort, uninstall from the Assist the following (if present):

- Framework

- Access
- Media Indexer

- Assist
And reinstall only, from the Interplay installer version:

- Assist
- Access

*Unity/ISIS client should not be uninstalled, but ensure it is logged in, with read access to all workspaces, before launching Assist.  The other applications, Framework and Media Indexer are not mandatory when using Assist.

7.  Check the Avid Knowledge Base (www.support.avid.com) for the Interplay Assist README, in case there are any limitations or bugs with the Playframe error.

Example from Assist 2.4.1 README:  http://resources.avid.com/SupportFiles/attach/README_InterplayAssist_V2_4_1.pdf
Playing
Bug Number: UDevC00081765. If you load a long sequence into the Video monitor that
contains many rendered effects, you might have difficulty playing it the first time and you
might see a Playframe Error message.
Workaround: Scrub through the sequence or play it again.
