Final Cut Studio (2009), Final Cut Pro 7: SmoothCam only works on .mov files

Posted in Final Cut Pro

Summary

The SmoothCam filter reduces unwanted camera movement from your footage, such as unstable crane or jib arm moves, teetering from handheld walking shots, or vibrations in automotive shots. However, the SmoothCam filter only works on .mov files.

Final Cut Pro 7.0, Final Cut Studio (2009)

To use SmoothCam on other media file types such as .dv, m4v, .mp4, .avi, or other file types, always transcode the original media file into a .mov file with the appropriate codec for use in your project. Then, apply the SmoothCam filter to the resulting transcoded .mov file.

If you want to use SmoothCam on .mxf files, you can:

  • Transcode the .mxf files to a .mov file.
  • Use a third-party application to simply rewrap the .mxf files as a .mov file.
  • Ingest the media directly into Final Cut Pro via Log and Transfer if the original source media is available. If you do not need to change the codec and there is no transcoding required, this will be as fast as copying the file. Then you can apply the SmoothCam filter to the resulting file.
