OS X Server: How to require authenticated binding between server and clients

Posted in Apple Portable Computers

Learn how to require authenticated binding between OS X clients and OS X Server.

This setting only affects OS X clients binding to OS X Server. If it is enabled, clients will be prompted for a directory administrator password when binding to the server. This setting does not control or limit any other access the LDAP database on the server.

You can set this by using the slapconfig Terminal command on the server.

  • To require authentication when a client binds to the server, use this Terminal command:

sudo slapconfig -setmacosxodpolicy -binding required

  • To allow authenticated binding, but make it optional (the default setting), use this Terminal command:

sudo slapconfig -setmacosxodpolicy -binding enabled

  • To disable authenticated binding, use this Terminal command:

sudo slapconfig -setmacosxodpolicy -binding disabled

Additional Information

To determine the state of this setting, use this command:

sudo slapconfig -getmacosxodpolicy

The key "Directory Binding" indicates whether authenticated binding is enabled. The key "Binding Required" indicates whether it is required.

iTunes: How to convert a song to a different file format

Posted in Apple Portable Computers

You can convert a song to a different file format while keeping a copy of the original. For example, you can save a copy of an uncompressed song file such as AIFF or WAV to a compressed format like MP3, AAC, or Apple Lossless Encoder.

Saving a copy of a song in a new file format

When converting from a compressed to uncompressed file format (for example, from MP3 to AIFF) you shouldn't notice any reduction in sound quality. However, when converting between compressed formats (for example MP3 and AAC), you may notice a reduction in the sound quality. For the best results, if you want your music encoded in a different file format, you should import the music again from the original source using the new encoding format.

To convert a song's file format:

  1. Open iTunes Preferences.
    Windows: Choose Edit > Preferences.
    Mac: Choose iTunes > Preferences.
  2. Click the General button, then click the Importing Settings button in the second section of the window.
  3. From the Import Using pop-up menu, choose the encoding format that you want to convert the song to, then click OK to save the settings.
  4. Select one or more songs in your library, then from the Advanced menu, choose one of the following (The menu item changes to show what's selected in your Importing preferences):

    • Create MP3 version
    • Create AAC version
    • Create AIFF version
    • Create WAV version
    • Create Apple Lossless version

If you haven't imported some songs into iTunes yet, you can import and convert them at the same time. This will create a converted copy of the file in your iTunes Library based on your iTunes preferences. To convert all the songs in a folder or on a disk, hold down the Option key (Mac) or Shift key (Windows) and choose Advanced > Convert Import preference setting. The Import preference setting will match what you chose in step 3. iTunes will prompt you for the location of the folder or disk you want to import and convert. All the songs in the folder or on the disk will be converted. Note: Some purchased songs are encoded using a protected AAC format that prevents them from being converted. iTunes Plus purchases are not protected and can be converted.

The song in its original format and the newly converted song appear in your library.

Additional Information

About compression

When you convert a song, some data may be lost due to the way certain formats compress data. For this reason these formats are sometimes called "lossy" formats. The advantage of using a "lossy" format is that the file sizes are much smaller, which means you can store more songs in the same amount of disk space. The disadvantage is that the sound quality may not be as good as the original, uncompressed format. Depending on the song, the speakers or headphones, and the player you use to play the song, you may not be able to tell the difference between a compressed "lossy" song and a song that is not compressed.

Once a song is compressed (meaning some of its data is lost) you cannot retrieve the data by uncompressing it. If you convert a song from a "lossy" format to a uncompressed format, the quality of the song will not improve and the file will only take up more disk space. For example, if you convert a song in MP3 format (a compressed format) to AIFF (an uncompressed format) the song will take up much more space on the hard disk, but it will still sound the same as the compressed file. In order to take advantage of uncompressed formats you should only import songs using these formats.

A note about copyright

It is licensed to you only for reproduction of non-copyrighted materials, materials in which you own the copyright, or materials you are authorized or legally permitted to reproduce. If you are uncertain about your right to copy any material, you should contact your legal advisor. See the iTunes Store Terms of Service for additional information.

OS X Server (Mountain Lion): Configuring Web realm access for Active Directory or LDAP accounts

Posted in Apple Portable Computers

The Web service with realms uses HTTP Digest authentication by default to provide secure access to the realms. Learn how to enable basic authentication over SSL to support user accounts defined in Active Directory or third-party LDAP Servers.

You should make a backup copy of the /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/WebConfigProperties.plist file prior to editing it.

  1. Stop the Web service in Server app.
  2. Recommended: Acquire and install a trusted SSL certificate, then use Server app to configure Web Service to use the certificate. You can use the server's default, self-signed certificate for web access, but web browsers may warn that the certificate is "invalid".
  3. Using root access and the guidelines in How to edit configuration files, edit the /Library/Server/Web/Config/apache2/WebConfigProperties.plist .
        <key>RealmAuthType</key>
        <string>Digest</String>

  4. Change Digest to Basic. This makes realm access use Basic authentication, which is required for Active Directory and LDAP users.
  5. Start the Web service.

        • Compound Clip creation in the timeline now saves the clip in the Event Browser for re-use in other projects. Changes to the original Compound Clip will update all copies of that Compound Clip across projects. The Reference New Parent Clip command allows you to select any Compound Clip in the timeline and save a duplicate to an event in a single step.
        • XML 1.2 features improved metadata import and export for richer integration with third-party apps.

        • Ability to manually tag clips as anamorphic using the Anamorphic Override option in the Inspector.
        • When duplicating an event or project where media resides on shared storage, only the links will be copied. This speeds up duplicating or moving events and projects to another editing station that is linked to the same shared media.
        • Improves behavior when moving clips to different vertical positions in the timeline.
        • Generators now support the 1.8:1 aspect ratio, which is used with a range of frame sizes.
        • Video dissolves now default to the linear Video look instead of the Film look that includes some ease in and ease out.

        Logic Pro X 10.0.1 update

        Stability

        • Logic Pro X should no longer quit unexpectedly when:
          • A Track Stack is flattened during playback.
          • Trimming an audio file in the Audio File Editor.
          • Switching from the Audio File Editor to the Audio Track Editor after enabling Flex Pitch.
          • Selecting or moving notes in the Piano Roll.
          • Saving a patch with an edited Smart Controls layout.
          • Several Software Instrument tracks are created in quick succession from Logic Remote.
          • Changing a velocity range in the EXS Editor while playing a note.
          • Deleting an Arrangement marker.
          • A second lane of MIDI data is added with the pencil in the Step Editor.
        • Fixes an issue that could cause content downloading to hang.
        • Logic Pro X should no longer hang if the Length parameter in the Step Editor was double-clicked.
        • Logic Pro X no longer hangs when a settings folder containing more than 138 settings files is accessed from Logic Remote.

        Track Stacks

        • Tuner is now available when selecting the main track of a Track Stack.
        • The output routing on a Drummer Track that has been manually reassigned to an Aux is no longer reassigned to No Output when changing drum characters.
        • It is again possible to switch Aux channels that are part of a Multi Output Software Instrument between mono and stereo.
        • Resolves an issue in which a copied main track of a Summing Track Stack did not maintain the correct routing for sub-tracks.
        • Track Stacks that contain both software instrument and audio tracks will no longer be inadvertently flattened by loading a Patch.
        • Multi-timbral tracks are no longer created as track stacks by default.

        Score

        • Text styles in the Score window event inspector pop-up menu now display the currently selected language.
        • You should now be able to import custom Text Styles into a new project.
        • Edit focus on selected regions should now be properly maintained when opening the Staff Style window.
        • You should now be able to select rests and bar repeat objects in the Score window.
        • Mapped Staff Styles no longer improperly show a Transpose value.

        General

        • Create New Track with Next Channel now works as expected for multi-timbral Software Instrument or External MIDI tracks.
        • When Follow is selected in the Drummer Editor, a track is now automatically assigned for Drummer to follow.
        • When exporting projects to AAF, 24-bit audio files are no longer converted to 16-bit.
        • Resolves an issue in which in some cases notes copied in the Piano Roll ended up at unexpected positions.
        • Shift-clicking in the timeline to adjust the cycle range now works as expected.
        • The Mixer now correctly shows channel strips when navigating between multiple folders in the Main window.
        • Take regions now appear consistently in the Track Audio Editor when they are selected.
        • Resolves an issue in which Arrangement markers were improperly resized after being dragged in projects with a start point before bar 1 1 1 1.
        • Resolves an issue in which undo did not work after an Arrangement marker was copied.
